Last week the Rotary Club of Newport News had another packed agenda! We were fortunate enough to have Mayor-Elect Phillip Jones attend our meeting. Once sworn into office, Mayor Jones will be the 27th mayor of our great city.

During his talk, Phillip shared updates on various topics, such as his background, his 100-day plan, and how he plans to leverage the community and his network to “make Newport News cool again.” Phillip then took questions from our members. , Thank you, Phillip, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to talk with us.

Congratulations to Sara Balgoyen on being inducted as our newest club member. Sara is the Development Director at Soundscapes. Soundscapes is a nonprofit youth development organization in Newport News that uses music instruction and performance to develop life skills in students from early childhood to early adulthood. Soundscapes provide daily after-school music programs, a regional youth orchestra, and several week-long summer camps. Sara recently relocated here from Illinois, where she was a member of the Rotary Club of Mahomet. Welcome to the club, Sara. We’re so happy to have you!
We have so much prepared for the upcoming holidays. We will be bell ringing for the Salvation Army, preparing the warehouse for the Angel Tree program, celebrating with our own holiday party, and meeting for lunch meetings.
