The Rotary Club of Newport News formally (or informally) celebrated the club’s 106-year anniversary on August 30th. The club was formally chartered on August 1st, 1916, and was the original club of Newport News. Today there are several clubs across Newport News and Hampton Roads. Each club meets on different days of the week, at different times, and at different locations.
Part of the celebration is recognizing a Rotarian of the Year. Each year the club recognizes someone that exemplifies Rotary values and makes a significant contribution to our club and community. This year, Deloris Thomas was recognized as the 2022 Rotarian of the Year. Deloris is on the Board of Directors, attended the Rotary International Conference in Houston, Texas, volunteered several community service hours, and had perfect attendance, just to name a few of her accomplishments for the year. Congratulations, Deloris! Your award was very well deserved. Wear your recognition proudly!
During the celebration, the club also recognized Patrick Murphrey as the club’s official Past President. Patrick’s official time in office was from July 1st, 2021 – June 30th, 2022. Past President Patrick Murphrey was responsible for the overall leadership of the club, establishing club goals and presiding over each of the weekly meetings. Congratulations, Patrick, on an outstanding year!
Everyone that attended had a great time, and enjoyed the fellowship of other members and their guests. Charter night is a great way to look back at the club’s accomplishments and reflect on its rich history. The club celebrated with a bit of a twist. Nosh Modern Mobil Bistro catered the meal. “This was a great way to support a Newport News business in a different and fun way,” said Tim Ryan, club president.
