This week the Rotary Club of Newport News hosted Mike Giardino, the executive director of the Newport News Williamsburg Airport. Mike had an open and candid conversation with our club. We talked about the airport’s challenges since Southwest Airlines’ departure from Newport News. We also discussed significant challenges the airport faced during COVID and the challenges the airport still faces as the country recovers from COVID. Mike also clarified any confusion people may have about the trailer park and the airport’s relocation efforts of the tenants in the park.
Mike also touched on the Avelo Airlines deal that brought the airline to Newport News. It was fascinating to learn that with the Avelo Airlines deal, it’s the airport staff that services the entire experience for the customers. The staff manages the check-in counter, baggage handling, and servicing of the aircraft to provide a win, win, win scenario for the airline, airport, and customers that are looking to fly to more destinations. Mike stated that he is doing everything he can to attract more airlines and additional flights to our airport. Thank you, Mike! We appreciate your time and open conversation.
If you would like to attend an upcoming Rotary meeting, we meet every Tuesday at the James River Country Club from 12:00 – 1:00 pm.
